Cefixime

  • Effective high-dose medication
  • Clinically proven to cure gonorrhoea with Azithromycin

Cefixime is a cephalosporin antibiotic, which means that it works to treat and cure bacterial infections by fighting the bacteria in your body and affecting pathogen cell walls. This weakens the bacteria, causing it to die. It’s often used to treat sinusitis, tonsillitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, cystitis, kidney infections and gonorrhoea, but can also be used in the treatment of many other infections.

Cefixime as a treatment

Unlike other types of antibiotics, Cefixime doesn’t influence the ability of a bacteria to multiply, but works to prevent each individual bacterium’s ability to form cell walls, which is vital for it to spread and cause an infection. It causes the bacteria to become structurally unstable, unable to protect itself and perform natural cellular functions, which eventually causes it to break up and die.

Benefits of Cefixime

Cefixime tablets are a fast acting antibiotic that can treat and cure gonorrhoea in a single one-off dose, providing relief from symptoms. It completely removes the bacteria from your system without requiring you to take the medication over a prolonged period of time. For this reason, it is less likely to cause lasting and uncomfortable side effects.

Side effects

Cefixime may cause some side effects, although it is highly unlikely. Side effects don’t tend to last very long, especially if you are using Cefixime tablets as a once-off treatment for gonorrhoea. The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, stomach pains, headaches, genital itching or dizziness. If you experience any of these side effects for a prolonged period of time or if you experience anything more serious such as an allergic reaction, you should let your doctor know straight away.

Taking Cefixime

Although most men and women over the age of 18 can take Cefixime tablets for the treatment of gonorrhoea, it’s not advised that you take it if you are allergic to cefixime, the main ingredient in this medication. You may need to take special care while taking this medication if you have ever had colitis, kidney problems, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. During your consultation you should mention to your doctor if you are taking any medications, especially warfarin.

Dosages

The dosage of Cefixime you’ll need to take will largely depend on your condition and your current and past medical information. In general, a once-off 400mg dose is recommended to successfully cure gonorrhoea. You can take Cefixime tablets with or without food, but it’s important that you don’t drink any alcohol while taking this medication, and for up to 48 hours afterwards.
